As a freelance writer, I’ve bounced around the house, looking for that perfect work space. Since our house is pretty small, I only have a few options.
And even fewer that work.
I was very bummed when the boudoir-office fell though. My boudoir is the red room behind our bedroom that holds our clothes, various craft WIPs and all the girlie stuff that just doesn’t work in the rest of the house – like feather boas and Mardi Gras beads and pinup posters. It’s a froof-fest, and I love it. It was going to be the perfect space for isolating myself from the rest of the house and getting in that creative zone.
But the boudoir is subject to extreme temperatures. Even with the door open to let in cool air from the window unit and box fan, I was just too hot. Maybe I can try it again in the fall…
Next I tried the bed. This worked for a little while, but got to be pretty tough on my neck and lower back. I love my laptop, but having the entire computer in my lap means I have to stare down. Having it propped on pillows makes it harder to reach. Not working.
The dining room table won out. The main drawback was that I was too much “in the house. ” I could see every little thing that needed to be done – dry plants, dirty dishes, messy table tops, debris covered floors, uneaten cookies… But, I got some work done, and the addition of a USB keyboard and mouse made things even better.
Then, last Thursday, I realized how much I loved our porch. It is our indoor green space. The room itself puts me in mind of a mid-century campground cabin, and the numerous plants and windows make it feel almost like you’re outdoors. I decided to move myself out there for the day. Once I got the raccoon blanket rigged to block out the sun that was burning me and making a glare on the screen, I nestled into the corner for what turned out to be a productive day of work.
I’ve decided to accept that I probably won’t have a fixed work space until we live in a house with an actual office. Until then, I go where the day takes me. This week, it’s been the bed again. As the weather gets cooler, I maintain faith in the boudoir.
Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend, darlings!!!
